Exploring Classical Music

Doublin Symphonic Orchestra performing in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Exploring Classical Music is open to any member who loves classical music.

We explore the almost infinite collection of classical music available on the Internet: lesser-known composers, lesser-known compositions of well-known composers, or lesser-known or unique performances of known compositions. There is always something new that you have not yet heard.

How the group runs:
(i) The presenter – a member of the group – introduces the piece we are going to hear;
(ii) We listen to it;
(iii) We discuss it.

Other information:

Typically, we take turns: a member prepares a playlist of compositions to explore (total length of up to 90 minutes). During the Zoom meeting, he/she shares his/her screen and sound with the group. If the group member does not feel technically competent, he/she e-mails the playlist to the leader who takes care of screen sharing. Several times a year we have a Desert Island Disk: members e-mail the leader their selection of music on a specific topic, for example, spring. The group leader e-mails the playlist (with comments, explanations, links to the music and additional material) a day before the meeting so that even those who cannot participate can listen to the selected music. A sample playlist illustrates what kinds of music we listens to.

The group meets twice a month, via Zoom. All correspondence will be by email via Beacon.
