Feminist Discussion Group
This discussion group brings women together each month to explore issues that are specific concerns for them. It’s an opportunity to express thoughts, raise questions and learn from each other. Member participation is important and the monthly discussion topics are chosen by the group as a whole. The group has discussed a diverse range of topics including; personal safety, inequalities in women’s healthcare, the unequal access for girls/women to sporting activities. The group has looked at whether our childhood toys may have shaped our future roles, reviewed the portrayal of women in film and TV, talked about women in the art world and lots more. The group spends much of its 90 minute session in break-out rooms with 5-6 in each, enabling easier discussion in a Zoom context as well as making it more sociable. The whole group convenes together for the last 20 minutes sharing some feedback about the break-out room discussions, and deciding the next month’s topic. It is not a political group and we have some ground rules to remind us all that it is essential to maintain a friendly, supportive ethos in which everyone who wishes to speak has the opportunity to do so. The group meets via Zoom.
